Did you know that it could be important to see your dentist before you become pregnant? Changes in your hormone levels can create changes in your diet and could also lead to different dental problems developing. If you’re already expecting, you do not need to worry–seeing a dentist beforehand allows for you to have any existing problems treated without adaptations being made.
If you have noticed that certain foods make your teeth twinge, you may want to start avoiding these “trigger foods.” In many situations, these foods should cease being triggers after your pregnancy has ended. Sensitivity related to temperatures should also resolve thereafter.
You may want to cut back on eating sweets during your pregnancy despite the cravings. Sugar can feed the bacteria in your mouth, which they could convert into acids that eat through your enamel and lead to cavities. If the craving is too great to resist, you should rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth well afterwards.
Some women can suffer from dry mouth during their pregnancy, which could put them at greater risk for tooth decay and infections. If you are suffering from a dry mouth, you could try to drink more water and chew on sugarless gum to encourage saliva production. Saliva helps to naturally rid the mouth of food particles. Without an adequate source of saliva, the food particles may be feeding the bacteria and allowing cavities to form.
